Susan Derges
In the first image the main focus is the moon. The main colour scheme is blue, navy and black. The perspective is pointing up at the sky and this makes the nature look taller. All of the grass and flowers are very dark and blend together, they are blacked out. Susan has edited the picture so that there are clouds around the moon. Inside the circle created by the clouds there are no stars and water droplets in the sky, created by the cyanotype. The moon, which is the subject matter, is more in focus than the rest of the image and it stands out more because it is a brighter colour than the rest of the image. Two of the clouds in the top left corner are more blurry and dull than the rest which creates an effect of darkness.in the foliage at the bottom there are some flowers and long grass strands these frame the picture and adds to the circle created by the clouds.
The subject matter of this image is the moon which is brighter and stands out from the rest of the image. I notice lines of the grass bent in certain angles framing the subject matter. Another formal element I notice is colour, the main colour in this is blue as well as black and white. The last formal element I notice is tone as foliage at the bottom of the picture fades up into the rest of the image. I think Susan has used cyanotype in this image and Photoshop, or editing software to manipulate the picture.
She is trying to emphasize the moon to do this she has made the moon stand out by brightening the colour and placing clouds around it in a circular pattern. If I could interview the photographer I would ask her, what got her into photography, how she created the picture and how long it took her?
It is quite similar to some of her other images because she has others with a focus of the moon. Although some of her pictures are completely different because she has used a range of different techniques and used completely different subject matters and taken on a different style.
You could respond by creating a different type of picture in the same style. I have learned that you can form a picture in detail using cyanotype and photoshop.

Anna Atkins
In this photograph by Anna Atkins i can see 3 feathers 2 placed upright and the other facing downwards in a diagonal position. The feathers are white and detailed with a pale blue colour. Each feather has a fluffy piece on it pointing to the side and they are a much brighter white. on two their is a spotted pattern one allot clearer than the other. The background of this photo is a dull, patterned blue with a fabric texture.
The subject matter of this image is the feathers as they are the main thing in this photo and stand out the most. The formal element i notice the most in this are tone as i can see lots of different shades of white in the foreground and also many different tones of blue in the background.Another formal element i can see is texture which is a fabric texture over the whole photograph. To make this photograph Anna Atkins used the technique of cyanotype by leaving objects on the special cyanotype paper and leaving it in the sun, after this is done she has probably edited it photoshop.
I think Anna Atkins has deliberately kept this simple by having a very clear subject matter this makes it stand out and your eyes are immediately drawn to the three feathers in the centre of the image. If i could interview Anna Atkins i would ask her how she first got into doing photography and in particular cyanotype? I would also ask her how long, on average, it takes to create each image?
in many ways all of her photographs are very similar as they have all been done in a very simple way and have very clear subject matters. her photos also all have a blue background with the main image being in white like traditional cyanotype.you could look at this photo differently if you did not realise that Anna had used cyanotype to create it.
In response to this image i could make another photo in the same style by using cyanotype.

In this image I can see a template of on the letter f this is a pale blue against a much darker blue background. I can see a texture on the background that looks a little bit bumpy because of the paper that has been used. Another thing I can see is some water droplets on the f template which are a slightly lighter color than the rest of the image. in this image there is lots of line and geometric shape as well as the parallel lines included with the F the template edge and he edge of the paper. in this image you can see the background through the center of the F where the light could shine through.
The subject matter of this image is the F template as it is the thing which would draw your eyes in and towards. The first formal element I notice is the tone which is used with all the different shades of blue in this photograph. Another formal element I notice is the shape because of the geometric shapes used in this picture.to make this image I placed the template over the cyanotype paper and left it for about 20 minutes so the light could get to it and create the dark blue color over everything that wasn't covered. after this we brought it inside and it was washed, then left to dry.
This image has deliberately been set to the side of the page to create more interest rather than it being placed directly in the center of the piece of paper. The water droplets also create more interest to draw peoples eyes in.
this image is quite simple and plain compared to some others as it does not have much detail as well as being of a simple geometric item. This is also very different as most cyanotypes uses things from nature including plants and flowers.
I was inspired to create this image by people like Anna Atkins and Susan Derges who have also produced many similar cyanotypes.
