light painting
Light painting is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source while taking a long exposure photograph, either to illuminate a subject or to shine a point of light directly at the camera.
The items you must have to create light painting at night are a DSLR or camera with manual settings, a tripod, some sort of light e.g a small torch, Set the exposure, on your camera, to a relatively long value and turn down the aperture as much as you need. If you are inside you will need to turn off the lights at thus point.once the shutter is open you will need to use your torch to "paint" |
Gjon Mili
In this image i can see a woman figure scating in black and white. she is wearing a very contrasting white scater style dress which sits nicely against the dark grainy background. To exentuate this image Gjon has used light painting around the dancer, the light surrounding the dancer gives the effect of spinning because it is in circular motions as well as giving it more depth and a 3D look. The light stads out from the image as it is the brightest colour and is against different shades of black and grey.
The subject matter of this is the girl as she is what instantly catches your eye when you first see the image.one formal element i notice is shape this is shown in the light around the girl as well as texture im the backgroumd of this image and the floor. To create this image you could use two different ways, the first being photoshoping light into an existing image and the other using a torch and the method explained above.
i think the photographer is trying to give dimension to the subject matter using light as well as giving it a simple look by having a plain room with nothing else in and beingin black and white.
This image is very different to some of the other images i have seen done by Gjon mili as lots of his other images are done with him in, different coloured light, or without anybody in. Gjon has a wide variety of different images using the same technique but in many different ways, although he is the most famous for his light painting photographs he also works in differmet styles. If i could interview Gjon i would ask how did he discover painting with light to create a photo? and what is his favourite light painiting image he has ever done?

creating my own light paintings
I took the bottom three with Ashley drawing with the torch and Lauren took the top three with me drawing with the torch. These pictures were from my first experiment doing light painting in the darkroom.

rule of thirds
The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts. The theory is that if you place points of interest in the intersections or along the lines your photo becomes more balanced and will enable a more natural viewing. Studies have shown that when viewing images that people’s eyes usually go to one of the intersection points most naturally rather than the center of the shot – using the rule of thirds works with this natural way of viewing an image rather than working against it.
depth of field
depth of field is the area the camera doesn't focus on but there will be an area that stretches in front of and behind this focus point which will still appear sharp. The depth of field is not a fixed distance and can change size this is described as shallow or deep. some times you can use something that is called extensive depth of field in order to keep everything sharp although this is more rare.
in the image shown above you can tell there is only a very small part in focus and everything surrounding it is depth of field. This creates a very interesting effect and can draw people in to looking at the image.

Pinhole Cameras and Camera Obscura
A camera obscura is an optical device that led to photography and the photographic camera. The device consists of a box or room with a hole in one side. Whereas a pinhole camera is a simple camera in which an aperture provided by a pinhole in an opaque diaphragm is used in place of a lens.
A pinhole camera is a simple optical imaging device in the shape of a closed box. In one of its sides is a small hole which, via the rectilinear propagation of light, creates an image of the outside space on the opposite side of the box.it is the simplest camera possible. It consists of a light-proof box some sort of film and a pinhole. The pinhole is simply an extremely small hole in the front of the camera, (the only way light can get in).Alhazen who lived around 1000AD, invented the first pinhole camera, (also called the camera obsucura) The first pinhole camera was observed and noted by Aristotle around 330 BC

Man Ray
In this photograph I can see a stylized image of a dandelion in black and white. The very center is much brighter than the rest and because of the black background and the white image it creates a great contrast and makes it stand out very well. Although this is quite a simple design the color and tone make it a brilliant photograph.I like how the centre of the flower is a glowing white and the background is jet black.
The subject matter of this is the dandelion as it is the only thing in the image and it is in the centre. one formal element i notice is the tone as their are lots of different colours in the dandelion. Another formal element i notice is light as you can tell its coming from the very centre of the dandelion.I think this photograph has been created by using light sensitive paper in a dark room. He would have put his object (dandelion) on the paper and used an enlarger, after this he would have developed his image.
I think man ray is trying to keep this simple while still adding detail their is only one item in this picture but it has lots of tone, space and light in it to make it more interesting to look at. If i could ask man ray anything i would ask, how was this image made and what techniques were used to achieve it? And what inspired you to do your work in this style? I would like to know this because it is a unique style and i think it would be quite difficult to achieve an image like this.
Everything I've seen by the photographer man ray is in black and white and in a very similar simple style. Most of his work uses the formal element light in his photos which can give them more depth.Instead of seeing this image as one flower you could see it as several different flowers coming off form one point.
In response to this i could create an image in the same style using only black and white and using the same formal elements.
Lazslo Moholy-Nagy
In this photograph i can see a white flower. behind the flower you can see its shadow slightly above it and in the jet black background are a few specks of white. The flower head looks 3D because it has different tones which make it look like its coing out from the screen/paper. The slight fuzziness of the flowerhead and the sharp lines of the flowers stem crreate a good contrast. The harsh jet black also creates a great contrast with the bight white of the flower.
the theme/subject matter of this image is the flower as it is the main focus of this image. the first formal element i notice is light as this is what has created the shadow/raised part of flower on this image.Another thing i notice is tone as this is what has created all the differenet shades in this image. This phto has been made by using a technique called photogram. to make this acamera hasnt benn used but instead an object and light sensetive camera. after this he would have probably manipulated it on photoshop or another photo editing programme.
i think the photographer is trying to show that you dont need a camera to create an amazing photograph and that it does not have to be extremely detailed to be a breathtaking picture. If i had the chance to meet Lazslo Moholy-Nagy i would ask how long it took to create this photo? as well as how old was he when he started doing photography and how old was he when he made this photo?
This is similar to lots of his others as everything he has done is in black and white but it is also different as lots of his work is not done using photograms and is also manipulated more on a computer. if i didnt know this was done as a photogram i could think it was a picture taken with a camera and changed by using photoshop or another variation.
in my work i might try using photogram or using the same formal elements.
Man ray and Lazslo
Moholy-Nagy both use the same technique
to create their work but they do it in a very different style. They have both used black
and white and have done this using photograms but the photos still look
completely different. Although both are flowers one has more tone and shadow this makes it look more realistic and helps to give it depth.
experimenting with photograms.
We made our own photograms by placing an object of our choice on top of some kentmere glossy/ multigrade paper. I picked 3 green army men and placed them on the paper under the enlarger. We left it under for 4 seconds and then put in in the developer, we washed it then put it in the fix and washed it again. after this we then hung it up to dry in the dark room.

this image is a picture of 3 green army men in a row. these men are a striking white color on top of a patchy black background. There is a big contrast between the two opposite colors on this photogram. In the background of this image I can see a lighter gray colored streak running behind the army men, which are in the foreground. As well as these things I can also see a few marks around the edge of this photo.
the subject matter of this image is the three army men standing in a row these are a much brighter white and your eyes are immediately drawn to them. the first formal element I notice is the tone created with the huge contrast between the background and the subject matter. The other formal element I can see is line which is visible at the edges of the army men.to create this image I placed three green army men on a peice of photogtram paper and left it for 4 seconds with the light on after this i put it in a container of diluted developed, washed it, placed it in the fix and then washed it again. After this we left the image in the dark room hanging up to dry. If we had had more time we woulf have used stop to make it a better print.
This image is quite like others i have seen as it has very solid random objects in white with a very dark, black background. this is similar to some of Man Rays work in the style although he uses more objects on a bigger peice of paper and placed more randomly.
i was inspired to create this image by photographers such as Man Ray and Lazslo Moholy-Nagy. i tried to create my image in the same sort of stye and looked at some of their photos as inspiration.

for my second experiment I cut out many triangles out of stiff black card, I cut these out randomly and placed some overlapping and some spaced out. To make this image I placed the triangles on the piece of paper underneath the enlarger and left the light on for 4 seconds. Next I placed it in the developer till I could clearly see the image and then into the water to stop it developing then into the fix and washed it again before hanging it up to dry. This image didn't go as well as I had hoped as it is not in a brilliant pattern and doesn't involve too much.
photogram experiment 3
for this experiment I used two pieces of the paper instead of one to give a different effect and laid dome "found objects" on top of the paper. After this I turned the enlarger of for 5 seconds and then picked it up with a pair plastic tongs and put it into a container of diluted developer, the next step is to move it about in the developer and then wash it once you can tell it is fully developed before putting it in a container of diluted fix and proceeding to wash it. The last thing you have to do is hang it up and leave it a few days for it to completely finish drying.
In this image I have: skeleton leaves; keys; headphones; a spiral of paper/card; scissors; army men and film I placed these items in a random order and overlapped some of them to give it a messy effect. some of these objects were found in the darkroom, some deliberately brought from home for this project and some found in my school bag.
